Here goes - Citalopram the sequel

    Hi,

I have had anxiety for 2 years now. I tried to start a course of Citalopram this time last year and managed just 14 days before stopping. The drugs made my anxiety go through the roof and I did not sleep at all for 2 weeks. I reduced the dose to 10mg for the 3rd week and took Zopiclone for the insomnia, at the end of the 3rd week I stopped taking the tablets and felt a lot better.

In November I went back to see a specialist for help with back / neck pain / numbness / anxiety and was prescribed a more sedating AD Dosulepin 75mg. This made me very tired and sleep well, I have been taking this for the past 4 months but my sleep has deteriorated again and I still have anxiety.

2 weeks ago I went to my GP and he gave me 2 options, increase Dosulepin to 150mg or cross taper back to Citalopram. He explained that Dosulepin is an old drug and is quite toxic. Citalopram is a much cleaner and safer drug. So here I am trying Citalopram for the second time.

Currently I am 8 days into the cross tapering: 10mg Citalopram and 50mg Dosulepin.

This time round I have not experienced the insomnia, in fact I have the opposite feeling quite tired yawning alot and sleeping better. I do not have any increase in anxiety. Also I'm having lots of great and bizare dreams in fact I'm looking forward to sleeping tonight to see what I'm going to dream about!

I have started taking vit B-Complex, magnesium, and cod liver oil. Ordered some inositol as it might help with sleep and anxiety as well.

Will keep this thread updated with my experiences. I am very positive that Citalopram will work along with CBT and positive thinking!

    Hi mohc,

I'm a citalopram supporter...it's done wonders for me since last June. Yeah, the first 4 weeks or so can be tough, but that is barely a sacrifice for the ultimate benefits (in my opinion!).

Persevere and keep us posted! x

Go into settings and options and edit avatar. I've a Gruffalo picture against my profile, somehow uploaded it off the computer but don't ask me how!

Day 9 - Still sleeping better my nerves are quite electric this morning and muscle pain stiffness. The biggest thing is that I feel tired most of the time. Taking the children swimming this morning.

Have you noticed how badly anxiety, tiredness and citalopram go together...?
I'm permanently tireder that normal now, guessing due to the cit.

Got a week now of entertaining 2 very active boys in the school half term. x

For the time being after struggling for a year with insomnia the tiredness is a positive as I'm sleeping better at night. I think the continual high level of anxiety wears you down then as you start to calm down the tiredness catches up with you.

Thanks for the positive mel2 it really helps.
Day 10 and feeling pretty good been out for a walk this morning. Still only taking 10mg. The plan is to go to 20mg at 14 days but I might cut a tablet in half and do 15mg for a week. I don't think Cit is ment to be sedating maybe as my anxiety is reducing the strain of it all has caught up on me and that is what's making me tired.
