Very High ESR on 3 blood tests

About 3 months ago I was feeling tired and dizzy, so the doctor ordered some blood tests. I got the results and they made me see a doctor, apparently ESR was 87 which is high and indicates serious inflammation in the body.

I then had some more bloods taken a few weeks later to make sure the ESR had gone down and it was 100! So the doctor decided it could be serious and ordered all the blood tests under the sun plus Lupus, athritis etc...
They all came back fine apart from the ESR again which is now at 116 and something called CRP which was also slightly high.

Went to the doctors yesterday and he started talking about cancer and how it could be a sign of this but they don't know where or what. He was really very insensitive and not very helpful - really made me cry as cancer wasn't something I had though about. I have zero symptoms and apart from blurry vision occasionally I feel fine!

Really worried right now, but have no idea what the problem is though lol

Raised ESR and CRP is usually a sign that there is inflammation in the body. It is usually a sign of auto-immune disease. Your Dr isn't qualified to determine whether you have auto-immune disease as it is a highly specialised field. He should have referred you to a rheumatologist who would do further investigations. The only way your Dr would know whether you had cancer would be if he had seen other indicators/abnormalities in your blood test results. Inflammation in your body can cause serious long term damage to your organs (sorry if that scares you, but it's true) so you need to be referred to a rheumatologist ASAP. I would phone your GP and insist upon or, or failing that get a private appointment ASAP. You should be taking Prednisone (or an equivalent drug) to bring down the inflammation urgently. I know all this because I have auto-immune disease and have all the blood tests done regularly to look for these things.

By the way, I think you can get a raised ESR and CRP if you have had a virus but it shouldn't be getting higher which is why I'm concerned that this isn't being delat with more promptly.

Re: Very High ESR on 3 blood tests

I am going back to a different doctor on friday morning and taking my husband with me who is much better than I am at getting people to give proper answers and take proper action! Hopefully I will get something out of that )apart from another blood test lol)

I have had an abscess on my tooth, which I had two weeks of antibiotics for and I still dont think its completely cleared so am wondering if that could have been there for a while and causing the ESR to be through the roof? I am seeing the dentist next tuesday about this, hopefully they'll be able to sort the naughty tooth out once and for all! I have a painful ear as well since last friday, which is the side that the abscess is on, so think it might have something to do with that.

Anyway, am trying not to worry but in all honesty I am terrified!

I totally understand your fears. Not being given proper answers is not on! I'm not sure if an abscess could cause a raised ESR, and certainly not an ESR that keeps on rising, but I'm not an expert so I could be wrong. Please insist on further tests and more answers because leaving inflammation untreated can be very damaging. Good luck with it all, and please PM me if you have any questions about the tests etc. I am under the care of a rheumy and have regular tests so know a little bit about it, but like I said it's very complex - even my Dr says she doesn't even understand the blood tests I have done and there is no point in me asking her anything about them (great, lol).

I am no expert but have had this test quite a few times and there a quite a few reasons ESR can be raised besides cancer and auto immune issues. Have you been back to see the doctor yet , just wondered what they said ?

Re: Very High ESR on 3 blood tests

There is a form of Arthritis caused by micoplasmic infection. A very tiny bug that has no cell wall doesn't need a host and is too small to show on a normal microscope. ESR goes up as white cells incapsulate the micoplasma to kill it. Everyone has some micoplasma but it is normally taken care of by the Immune system till the Immune system is busy and it gets a free run.

It shows up after trauma, mental or physical and if you take large doses of Tetracycline drugs you will get sore and very sick and be mistaken for allergic to the drug. In truth the reaction is to toxins from a very fast die off of the micoplasma.

White cell count elevates some but ESR is usually 75 or higher.
Micoplasma do not live outside their food source so don't culture and I don't know if antibodies show in the blood work. Minocycline made me worse for two weeks then my ESR started coming down.
This is a very common form of arthritis in Canada and the US similar to lyme disease. First symptoms are only fatigue, no pain and inflammation.
Curable within the first three years.

    Davit

Again this is personal experience and just something to think about.

Hi , Just found this on through a search engine , I hope that you have had some answers by now , would love to know you are ok .

I myself am going through something similiar back to Drs in an hour to discuss blood test results received Friday . was told my CRP levels 20 when it should be 5 , was told by nurse to google it as she knows I a worrier and it has ruined my weekend , most sites talk of Cancer, Herat Diease , artitius etc , I went for tests because I keep having to clear my throat eventually having to remove Phlem which feels like I chocking on ( just me I know - A girl thing lol ) they treated it as Thrush 4 times so now done bloods , scared stiff is an unstatement , nurse said re do bloods in 2 weeks , I also have had an abcess on my skin but thought it had all cleared up , that apparently could be a reason but the word Cancer and Heart diease are over ruling my head...see if Dr can alay my fears later . thanks all
