Thread: Do doctors still give out MAOIs?

Exclamation Do doctors still give out MAOIs?

My housemate (a pharmacist) thinks I should ask. Both SSRI's and Trycyclics now make me crazy, the simplist way of putting it. His reasoning is this and that my Mum's been on them for 20 years successfully and mental health runs in the family.

I know about the food restrictions, I've grown up with them. I'd do anything for a more stable mind.

Re: Do doctors still give out MAOIs?

    Hi,
I think, as I once spoke to my psychiatrist, he said that MAOIS are used as the last resort, if other Antidepressants fail to work for that person.

And, as in Australia there is a safer one, RIMA ( Moclobemide), which doesn't require food restriction, as long as used within the prescribed therapeutic dose, ( 600mg daily).

As with other non selective MAOIs, only Nardil ( Phenelzyne) and Parnate ( Tranylcypromine) are available here in Australia.

But, I read from a research website, This professor said, that , Parnate is stimulating, but less likely to cause hepatotoxicity than Nardil.

( I don't know If i am allowed to mention the Research website).

    Kind regards,
    Dave
