Thread: Another Amoeba fear.

    Brain eating amoeba from water?

I'm paranoid. Last year, my buddy had pretty bad water in his apartment. Tonight while drinking from his tap (which I guess improved) a little went in my nose. Now I'm paranoid a freaking AMOEBA is going to eat away at my brain. Like, how irrational is this? Anyone else ever dealt with this?

I never heard of brain eating amoeba until I started reading here.

There are many posts on it.. where do you guys get this nonsense?

I'm suspecting from googling and in that case you caused your own misery.

Re: Brain eating amoeba from water?

The brain-eating amoeba is a fairly common fear on this forum.

But yes, it's an irrational fear based on reading news reports of a hugely rare occurrence. For example in 2008 300 people in the entire world got it, meaning in any one year it's less than a 1/200,000,000 chance.

If it was as easy to get as scared people on this board think, it would be an epidemic.

I'd never heard of it until last year either - from this board.

There are actually lots of posts about it if you do a search, with absolutely loads and loads of reassuring statistics and comments.

Its the rarest of the rare - and I'd say its a zero percent chance anything has gone up your nose that is eating your brain. You are missing a fairly important point here; your buddy lives there, as do all the other apartment dwellers and none of them have passed from having their brains eaten ?

    Another Amoeba fear.

I was rinsing an eye with a shot glass full of water when something got in my eye, and then I realized a bunch of the water went up my nose. Now I'm overly paranoid about an amoeba. Despite the fact there have been zero cases in my state (Ohio), and the fact it's cold as heck.....and I worry about getting the first known case of amoeba in the state......

That’s usually from lake water. Assuming you didn’t use lake water, you will be fine.
