Has anyone had a swollen tongue?

I'm not talking about the mere feeling of a swollen tongue that comes when we focus too much attention on it, but rather a genuinely swollen tongue. Mine comes and goes. Two days ago it lasted several hours. Yesterday it was back to normal. Today it's been going for several hours again. I can tell by the way it looks thicker at the sides, and speaking is a bit more challenging. I have to concentrate to say 's' and 'th' words properly. I plan to see my doctor as soon as I can, and I'm hoping she'll refer me to all the right specialists.

I've heard it can be caused by hypothyroidism, a vitamin B12 deficiency, allergies, Sjogren's Syndrome, and other things. Has anyone dealt with this before?

Also, has anyone had teeth marks in the sides of their tongue?

The past two weeks I've had a swollen tongue/throat. My throat is red also, I went to my doctor and low and behold he diagnosed me with some weird name and in lay mans terms it's a classic case of anxiety! The more I look/feel/touch it, it feels worse. And I have teeth marks too and it's mostly cause I'm tense and my tongue is pushing against my teeth. Hope this helps!

Thank you, lmcc87, it does! By the way, where is your throat red? Is it at the back of your mouth, or further down? I'm seeing an ENT soon who will do a scope. I expect he'll find evidence of acid reflux, but I'm especially eager to hear his opinion of the tongue swelling. Did your doctor explain how anxiety can cause it?

lmcc87, how are you doing? My 'enlarged tongue' episodes still come and go, and my voice has slowly gotten more raw over time. Curious whether you got any answers.

I had teeth marks on my tongue last week and thankfully gone now. I have been biting my tongue unknowingly and gritting my teeth. Also had a bright red tongue, seemed slightly swollen and burning sensation, but it's settled down now.
Yes, I heard its all anxiety related.

I used to do the same,Carnation. I remember talking to my psych about it years ago,and he told me it was stress/anxiety related,haven’t had it in years.
