Dread
The dead beat of leaden feet,
tread the dread way.
The aisles where strangers meet,
lead the path,
to the checkout's trap
and my dismay.
Rising bile chokes panic's first bite,
to utter the speech expected,
that ceremony agonising,
when I can only think of flight.
