    USEFUL HELP PLEASE

    hi there
    i have just joined the website and have been reading avidly. I just need some help identfying my problem. 3 years ago my wifa nad i split up (all amicable) then a month after that I was made redundant. Over the forthcoming weeks I started to develop tingling in my calves (like a muscle twitch), numbness in the tops of my ears, a knotted stomach and difficulty swallowing ie a permanent lump in my throat. I went to my doctor who is also a friend and had all the necessary blood tests which were fine. A quick referral to a counsellor and she said i was fine so my doctor gave me Propanolol. I took it for about 3 months but it never really went away. I have just come out of another relationship and it is back stronger than ever. I am 41, fit and healthy, I dont feel down particularly, probably have a glass of wine too much and have the same life problems as most people. Can anyone help or advise? I want these symproms to go but I dont want to take an drugs if can help it. Part of me says it is a state of mind that I should be able to get out of but i dont know where to strat. Is it anxiety, low self esteem, depression or what. No Idea!!!

    Welcome to the site.

    Certainly the knoted tummy and throat tightness are immediately identifiable as stress issues with the others being very likely to be adjuncts to this too.

    Propanolol wouldn't really help these unless other symptoms you don't mention were present too.

    You do not need drugs either.

    This is a stress response probably with a few bouts of anxiety - which would be normal given the circumstances and the knowledge that you will get through this swiftly.


    To resolve it -

    If you have stuff to express and it needs unravelling or you need help to make sense of whats been going on- then see a counsellor short term

    Meanwhile - some rescue remedy neat or in water will take the edge off difficult times

    Exercise ++

    True relaxation for body and mind - not just slobbed in front of telly.

    Proper eating

    Lots of distraction, socializing, hobbies and finding a new direction in your life and enjoying yourself are more healing than anything else.

    and time passing also helps.

    When do these symptoms come most - when you're alone, when you're emotional etc.

    Hi Chris, Yes it sounds so much like anxiety to me. I am 55 now and have suffered for about 40 years on and off but had many good years between too. And yes it does seem to reaper again out of nowhere. Until lass November 2004 I was fine for over 10 years, then November 2004 I gave up drinking, as I drank heavy for 40 years to hide my anxiety. Well it came back this time same as you worst than before. I do always get tingling in arms legs and a lot of chest pains and nearly always wake with dead arms, hands or legs. I had real bad abdominal pains too for about a year. I had blood tests, chest x-ray, Barium enema and a sigmoidoscopy that took close to 12 months from doctor referring me to the specialist to final test, this also added lots of stress as my GP thought it might be bowel cancer to start with. All the tests where clad and was diagnosed with IBS. So there are lots of symptoms with anxiety to many to list and all seem to real to be anxiety. Symptoms also seem to change a lot form one thing to another too. I found a book called, Essential Help for your nerves by Claire Weeks so helpful, I used to read a little each night and comforted me a lot. Also there is lots of help on this forum on the main pages. I also do relaxation and abdominal breathing exercises, this helps a lot of people but don’t seem to help me much.     Its £10 a year to join this site and they offer lots of help including a telephone recovery course free of charge, you can do the course one to one or in a group which is good. They also have self-help leaflet’s, books, CD’s and Relaxation Tapes. Hope this has been some help to you.     hi Chris,

    Welcome to the site!! It does sound like it could be anxiety to me as I share a few of your symptoms. As Vern says, this site and other ones would probably help you loads so please do check them out. Meanwhile, take care and let us know how you get on.
