Hi Trixie
It's getting to see the right people that counts. I got took into hospital a couple of years ago with what they described as "lower back pain", I had another word for it! While in the hospital I asked the surgeon who was allocated to the ward that I was in if I was getting an MRI. He said not unless I have an operation, which seemed fair enough, but still didn't answer what was wrong with my back. However, I went to another hospital that specialised in spinal problems and they did give me an MRI, which showed that I had a prolapsed disc, with some of the disc falling into the spinal cavity. I knew I had a something wrong with my back and it wasn't just plain old lower back pain, but it took a trip to another hospital to find it out. I'd say if you are not happy with the treatment you are getting ask your GP to send you to another hospital.

My GP has just sent me for mri of my spine and I waited 4 weeks that all. GP's can only refer for limited reasons and the service is on the mobile scanners that are contracted out to a private company not the hospital scanners which are only for use of consultants. When my neurologist wanted a brain mri a few months ago I only waited 2 weeks from seeing him to scan.
I think it all depends on your health authority. 10 yrs ago I waited 5 mnths for an mri scan but of course there were very few scanners then compared to now.
You can get a private scan for as little as £250.
Think it also depends on what county you live in too. Ive noticed that alot of people in the UK have had to wait so long. I dont know how you all wait that long.
I had to wait 10 days for mine, and 2 days for the results at a cost of $200 which is around 90 pounds or so.
And was the result to your liking? I was sent by the ENT consultant for my first one then after they had had the result I was sent by the neurosurgeon for the second one and now I have to have one every six months. When I was due to have the first one our local hospital hadn't had their machine fitted so patients were sent to a private hospital for it it cost my hospital £500 each time!!!!!
I went to the ER a couple weeks ago with all my symptoms and they decided to do an MRI on the spot. Went straight from the ER to the MRI, then about 30 minutes later had the results back.
Yes, they didn't find anything abnormal other than a sinus condition around my jaw that would cause me to be more prone to ear infections. They said that had probably been like that since birth. I was CERTAIN they were going to find some kind of tumor or abnormality causing all my symptoms.
