Can't you just ask for a bit of time away from your work, it is for an important reason. If you don't call today, when can you call ?I have to make call myself but am at work and they close by time I've finished
Don't go back and check the smell, there is no reason to do that. You've done really well to ignore them and do better for a few days, don't go backwards on that now as you've made real progress.
