    Choking Phobia

    Hi everyone

Does anyone else have a choking phobia? It's just that I feel that I am on my own with this horrible phobia. None of the books I have mention choking phobia, so maybe it is not that well known.
If there is anyone with this phobia please feel free to pm me.

    Thanks

    Re: Choking Phobia

Well I wouldn't say I have a phobia as such but I certainly do have some fear of it.

This is because not only did I have a choking episode when I was a kid because I took a forbidden large boiled sweet off the side and ran off to play (it was my own clumsiness of falling over the backdoor step which caused it to fly back out again) but also cos my youngest piglet gave me 2 very scary moments when she was about 6 or 7. I even had to do the heinlich (sp) manouvre.

Funny actually that when I had my first bout of panic attacks and was feeling acute these episodes came tumbling out to my doctor.

It's abit of a thing in our house now because of that. The other piglets didn't find it a barrel of laughs either.

Have you had an episode like this which is where your fear may have stemmed from??

    Hi piglet

My choking phobia started when I took a sip of fruit juice and it went down the wrong way. This was 15 years ago and my life has been a living hell since. I have had a fear of choking on drinks and food as well. But drinking liquids is the biggest problem.
I need all the help and support anyone can give at the moment because I really am at rock bottom, and I don't know how much more I can take.

It can be scary hun and I know my experiences have left a mark on me but I don't think I would be frightened of choking on liquid cos that can't block your airway.

    Hello Joanne !
This is a problem for me too - I choke badly on liquids. Its really scary when this happens isn't it ? Especially when what you would really love to do is down a glass of cool water down in one ! I'm worse when I feel anxious or panicky. Day to day I cope by drinking "thick" liquids like smoothies or frijj yogurt drink. My GP also prescribes a thickening powder to add to stuff called "Thick and Easy". I aslo have help from my speech and language therapist who identified the muscles in my throat were flat and out of shape, so I do exercises to get them back in shape. Ask your doctor for a referral.
    Be kind to yourself.

    Hi Joanne,

I just wanted to give you some big squashy hugs!

I've heard of choking phobia and I see Neptuno suffers with it too as I'm sure many others do. Have you tried writing down some positive, rational thoughts which you can read when the phobia's bad? If I'm feeling nauseous when eating I watch telly or something, perhaps you could try that too?

    Take care,
